2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft

Manning Taken No. 9 By Detroit Tigers

Right-handed pitcher Matt Manning of Sheldon High was taken No. 9 overall by the Detroit Tigers in tonight's 2016 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Manning is the 14th player from the Sacramento area to be chosen in the first round and the third highest all time, following Butch Edge of El Camino High (No. 6 by Brewers) and Leron Lee of Grant High (No. 7 Cardinals 1966).

The most recent first-round selection was Derek Hill of Elk Grove High who also was taken by the Tigers in 2014.

In 2016, Manning threw 40.1 innings, posting a 1.91 earned run average with a 2-1 record. He struck out 51 and walked 24 in his senior season leading the Huskies into the high school playoffs.

Dylan Carlson of Elk Grove High, fresh off another Sac-Joaquin Section title, is drafted No. 33 by the St. Louis Cardinals, the second area player taken in the first round of the 2016 MLB draft.

In 2016, Carlson batted .406 with 13 doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 40 runs batted in for the Thundering Herd, which won their third section title this season in Dylan's four-year varsity career.

Baseball America had ranked the switch-hitting outfielder No. 92, while MLB didn't have him among their Top 200 projections.

With Carlson being the second player from the area chosen in the first round of the same draft (Manning being the first), this marks only the second time that has happened since 1972. That year three players from the greater Sacramento area were picked in the first round: Joel Bishop of McClatchy and Mike Ondina and Jerry Manuel from Cordova High.

Now that 15 prep stars have been selected in the top round since the draft began in 1965, which area school has the greatest number of Round 1 picks? Grant High with three: Leron Lee (1966), Taylor Duncan (1971) and Ricky Jordan (1983). Three schools have two selections: McClatchy, Cordova and now Elk Grove.
